Last December Dan was sick and Drew was gone and this french videographer was coming to take a video of the band but their dog escaped and then and then and then….. we recorded this lovely video! Gael and Aretha were really great to work with and this series is a serious thing to follow. Few road trips are episodic in nature, but this one’s the tops!

About Recycle Fest:
Through collaboration between Indy Parks, Indiana Living Green, and MOKB Presents, the inaugural Recycle Fest will take place at MacAllister Amphitheatre inside Garfield Park on June 1. The event serves as a flagship event to the Indy Parks Summer Concert series

Recycle Fest combines environmentally responsible initiatives through an all day festival featuring live music, demonstrations, activities and education. On-site activities include recycling based demonstrations from Recycle Force, Republic Recycling, and Indiana Living Green Magazine. Pattern Magazine will host a “recycled fashion” area to collect donated clothing during the event. The Indianapolis Food Truck Alliance will provide a variety of mobile gourmet food options, while Sun King Brewery provides fresh local beer for adult attendees.

The diverse range of local and emerging talent will provide the main stage centerpiece with bands performing 40 minute sets comprised of half original material and half “recycled” cover songs. The 2013 performing artists include Darwin Deez, The Main Squeeze, KO, The New Old Cavalry, Hotfox, The Pro Letarians, Rodeo Ruby Love, Blue Moon Revue, and The Bonesetters.

Tickets go on sale for this all-ages event on Friday May 3 at 10am via Do317.com and Ticketfly.com for $15. Discount tickets will be available at partner locations including Sun King Brewery, Do317 Lounge, Luna Music, Indy CD and Vinyl, and Indy Swank.

Update #2: Columbus was rad! Thanks to Kobo Live for having us and to Cliffs, Comrade Question, and Pravada for an excellent night of music! Today we hit the high roads to Cleveland, Ohio to play Brite Winter! Bells and whistles and pop tarts galore!

Hey guys,

Quick update from Cincinnati! Last night was a blast at MOTR pub we played close to an hour set. Unfortunately, didn’t get to share the stage with Country Mice because they had car issues (best wishes, guys). We stayed the night at a friend-of-a-friends house/abandoned church. Practicing here in the sanctuary today, then heading to Columbus, Ohio to play at Kobo Live and meet up with Indianapolis pals Pravada (as well as stellar locals Cliffs and Comrade Question) tonight! Breaking legs all over Ohio.

When this list of Woody Guthrie’s “New Year’s Rulin’s” popped up on the internet a year ago, it became an instant classic of the season. Which means that the time has rolled around to remember it, reread it and take it again to heart. There’s a rulin’ on it to suit just about anybody because it never hurts to be reminded “Don’t get lonesome,” “Stay glad,” “Dream good” and “Love everybody.” Also, “Wash teeth if any.”

The guitar in the picture has gone missing - it belongs to Todd Heaton from Street Spirits and Ko, and he loves it very much!

We are really hoping someone just grabbed it by mistake, so please check all your gear and belongings to make sure that you don’t have it! Also, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD about this… We want to assume nobody stole it, but we know that theft happens - so please keep an eye out and get ahold of us (or Todd H.) if you see/hear/know anything at all!

The Answer - Gentleman Caller

I have loved Gentleman Caller since my early days of listening to bands on Musical Family Tree. They are so great, and after a bit of a hiatus, are coming back to settle their scores. I remember back in ‘07 (or ‘08?) going to see them play with These United States at the Irving Theater in Indianapolis. I was one of the three people who showed up to it, and I felt very lucky to be there. For $5 I have the memory of watching both Gentleman Caller and These United States getting up on stage together and belting out some of GC’s best back catalog. Listen to this track and buy the record when it comes out. You won’t be disappointed.

Premiere of the first single from the Mariel Recording Company vinyl release of Gentleman Caller’s new album, “Wake” (Oct. 2). The cornerstone of a brilliant album. This is what I wrote about it, as Kang and I were working on the press materials.

“Perhaps no song on the album better demonstrates Childers’ ability to navigate complex emotional terrain better than, “The answer”. Composed after the death of Indiana musical luminary, Lon Paul Elrich, the song finds its protagonist traveling back through his life, recounting the ways he tried, to varying degrees of success, to find balance and even peace. We are transported back to his childhood class room, where his bony frame encouraged ridicule, to the church of his youth, where the preacher’s tales of hell fire and original sin did more to terrify than enlighten, to the pharmacy counter where the ineffectual anxiety medicine was doled out, and to the bar where he sipped beer with the other searchers, and with those who had long since given up the search. And after all this, the devastating final lines that turn the song on its head. It’s a stunning piece of work, and if it fails to give you goose bumps, your goose may not work.”
